A történet főszereplője egy parazita. A paraziták olyan élőlények, melyeknek egyes fajai állatok tudatába férkőzve képesek megváltoztatni a szerencsétlen fertőzöttek viselkedését úgy, hogy azok épelméjüket vesztve, önként sétálnak a halálba. Hihetetlen, de egészen apró élőlények náluk nagyságrendekkel nagyobbakat is képesek az uralmuk alá vonni. Az egyik legijesztőbb zombikreátor pedig nem más, mint egy gomba.

1859-ben fedezték fel és Ophiocordyceps unilateralis névre keresztelték ezt a különleges parazita gombát. Jelenleg főleg a trópusi esőerdőkben él – nem is akárhogyan.
Nem egyszerűen kinő a talajból, mint mondjuk az általunk jól ismert csiperke. Ennek a parazita fajtának a technikája egyenesen rémisztő: a Camponotini nevű törzs hangyáit használja fel úgy, hogy megfertőzi őket a talajra szórt spóráival, a tudatuk és cselekedeteik fölött pedig átveszi az irányítást. A fertőzött és gyakorlatilag halálraítélt gazdaállat ezután elhagyja a fészkét, és olyan helyre irányítja őt élősködője, ami annak a legmegfelelőbb hőmérséklet és páratartalom szempontjából.
A hangya spóráktól ragadós teste ezután rögzül egy levél alsó oldalára. 4-10 napig is eltart, míg a gazdaállat meghal, addig pedig a gomba kényelmes körülmények között tud szaporodni. A borzalom pedig itt „csúcsosodik ki”: ekkor ugyanis a hangya fejéből szó szerint kinő maga a gomba – látványra olyan, mintha egy faággal szúrták volna át szerencsétlen ízeltlábú fejét -, amelyből kiszabadulnak a spórák, a talajra hullva pedig várják újabb áldozataikat – vagyis voltaképp az élő-mozgó fehérjedús termőtalajt.
A horror történet pedig ismétlődik. Újra és újra…
