Jim Lovell parancsnokimodul-pilóta szavai, aki az Apollo-8 küldetés során Frank Borman parancsnokkal és Bill Anders holdkomppilótával a világ legfontosabb fényképei között számon tartott felvételeket készítették el a Hold mögött felbukkanó Földről 1968 szentestéjének napján.
Az Apollo-program az Egyesült Államok egyik, emberek részvételével zajlott űrprogramja volt 1961 és 1972 között. Az Apollo-8 elsődleges célja az volt, hogy lehetséges leszállóhelyeket derítsen fel egy jövőbeli holdra szálláshoz. Rendkívüli eredményekkel zárult a küldetés: először sikerült űrhajósoknak egy másik égitest körül pályára állni, majd el is hagyni azt, elsőként megpillantani a Hold túloldalát (mivel szinte ugyanakkora forgási és keringési idővel mozog a Hold, mindig ugyanazt az oldalát látjuk a Földről). És nem mellesleg először látni teljes valójában, bolygóként a Földet.
Amikor azon a bizonyos 1968. december 24-i napon az űrhajó éppen a Hold túloldala felett repült és a horizont mögül előbukkant a Föld, az űrhajósok számára egyfajta földfelkeltét hozott létre. Amikor Frank Borman parancsnok elkezdett fotózni az űrhajó ablakából, felhívta társai figyelmét erre a páratlan jelenségre, akik feladataikat félbehagyva azonnal színes fotókat kezdtek el készíteni.
A Hold forgási és keringési idejének majdnem azonos volta miatt szinte tökéletesen kötött keringése van, ebből kifolyólag a felszínéről nem figyelhető meg valódi földfelkelte, mivel egy teljes felkelte és nyugta kb. 27 nap alatt megy végbe, lényegében csak felvételről visszanézve tűnne fel a Föld mozgása a Hold „égboltján”. A bolygónk alatt látható árnyék pedig nem véletlenül lehet ismerős: ahogyan a Holdnak is vannak fázisai innen nézve – mivel a Föld körüli keringése során a Nap általi megvilágítottsága állandóan változik -, úgy a Holdon Föld-fázisok figyelhetők meg, egy ilyen látszik a fenti képen.
A Hold felszínének feltérképezését tehát sikeresen végrehajtotta a Borman-Lovell-Anders alkotta csapat, ami megágyazott az alig néhány hónappal későbbi világszenzációnak.
Az Apollo-8 tartalékszemélyzetének tagjai éppen az a Neil Armstrong és Buzz Aldrin voltak, akik néhány hónappal később az Apollo-11 űrhajósaiként 1969. július 20-án 20 óra 17 perckor elsőként sikeresen leszálltak a Holdra, ezzel új fejezetet nyitva az emberiség modern kori történelmében.
