A pénzspórolás alapvetően egy rendkívül hasznos szokás. Apja halála után annak bálnavadászatból szerzett vagyonát örökölte meg, mintegy 7,5 millió dollárt, ami már akkor is elképzelhetetlenül nagy összegnek számított. Hetty azonban nem ült az örökségén: rendkívül jó szimata volt a befektetésekhez, és folyamatosan gyarapította vagyonát. A mérhetetlenül nagy anyagi biztonság ellenére elképesztően fukar asszony volt: mindig ugyanabban a fekete, idővel elnyűtt és kopott ruhában járt (innen ered a boszorkány becenév), csak hideg vízben fürdött, mivel túl drágának találta a meleg vizet, orvosra pedig semmit se költött, inkább kikúrálta magát. De nem csak saját magára sajnált kiadni egy megveszekedett centet is: egyszer a fia eltörte a lábát, és a szegényeknek fenntartott ingyen kórházba küldte, csakhogy ne kelljen fizetnie az ellátásért. Ám amikor felismerték a híres és kőgazdag pácienst, ki akarták fizettetni a kezelés költségeit. Hetty saját fia egészségével sem törődött, egy orvosnak sem volt hajlandó fizetni. A fia lábát a kezeletlen sebesülés miatt végül amputálni kellett.

J. Paul Getty amerikai olajmágnás 1942-ben alapított Getty Olaj Vállalat nevű cégével alapozta meg óriási mértékű vagyonát, melynek gazdasági alapja részben a szintén olajból meggazdagodó édesapjától származott. A több nyelven folyékonyan beszélő és sokat olvasott Getty mégis végletekig fösvény természete miatt lett ismert. A házában a vendégeinek fenntartott fizetős telefonon kívül a leghírhedtebb cselekedete az volt, amikor az elrabolt unokájáért nem volt hajlandó kifizetni a váltságdíjat. 1973-ban Rómában rabolták el J. Paul Getty III-t, akiért első körben 17 millió dollárt követeltek. A több százmillió dolláros vagyonnal rendelkező Getty elutasította a fizetést azzal érvelve, hogy van még másik 13 unokája, akik így emberrablók célpontjává válhatnak. A bűnözők látva, hogy a gazdag rokon nem hajlandó fizetni, az elrabolt unoka fülét is elküldték bizonyíték gyanánt. Getty addig-addig makacskodott, hogy az emberrablók már 3 millióval is megelégedtek volna. A nagypapa célja végső soron a spórolás volt: a követelt összegből csak 2,2 millió dollárt volt hajlandó kifizetni, mert ebből még a maximális mértékű adót vissza tudta igényelni. A maradék 800 ezer dollárt kamattal terhelve(!) kölcsönözte oda fiának. Fél év fogság után meggyötörten és megkínozva, de J. Paul Getty III-t szabadon elengedték. Miután megmenekült, felhívta nagyapját, hogy megköszönje neki a segítségét, de Getty nem volt hajlandó beszélni vele. Az unoka az átélt gyötrelmek hatására alkohol- és kábítószerfüggővé vált, végül emberi roncsként halt meg 2011-ben.
